Larry Evans is the know-it-all, handlebar-mustachioed Indiana Jones of the mushroom world. Evans, along with fellow connoisseur and fanatic Gary Lincoff, leads viewers into the weird world of mycology in Know Your Mushrooms. Backed with an original score by The Flaming Lips, director Ron Mann's documentary lends an investigative eye into everyone's favorite fungus, culminating at the Telluride Mushroom Festival in Colorado, where 'shroom fans converge to celebrate the thousands of varieties — like fleshy button and Portobello, or psychedelic psilocybin, a spiritual tool and kaleidoscopic hallucinogen. Having ventured into offbeat and off-the-radar pop culture in underground tales like Comic Book Confidential and Tales of Rat Fink, Mann now follows Evans and Lincoff into the fungal foray. The director sought inspiration from colleague-in-weird Jim Jarmusch, who encouraged him to dig into mushroom culture (with its many subcultures) and its parade of scientists, chefs and straight-up worshippers. Evans and Lincoff guide a fact-filled, scientific adventure that appreciates the cultural fungal phenomenon — from foodie fascination to the counter-cultural icon and life-giver to the titular plumbers in Nintendo's Super Mario Bros. Tickets $7 general admission, $6 students/seniors, $5 members.
