The results are in for the Louisiana Gold Culinary Classic held Aug. 4. New Orleans winners included Scott Varnadoe from Southern Hospitality Catering for Best of Show; Duke LoCicero from Café Giovanni won in the duck category; Alex Stockl from the New Orleans Marriott won for his study in beef, as well as in the vegetable and lamb categories; his co-worker, Kate Zickenfoose, championed the desserts; Otis Simpson from the English Turn Country Club took the Junior category, and the culinary students from Delgado Community College won the team competition.

On Tuesday, August 14, Galatoire's (209 Bourbon St., 525-2021) will host its final summer wine dinner. Heritage House Wines will pair selections from Estancia, Franciscan and Simi vineyards with the five-course meal. The cost is $75 per person.

The six-course meal is $60 all-inclusive. Call also to register for the tasting of "Mysterious Wines" scheduled for Aug. 16 at the Metairie store.
As for the brew, Wednesday, Aug. 15 marks the Crescent City Brewhouse's (527 Decatur St., 522-0571) annual Brewmaster's Dinner. Chefs Mark Latino and Andrew Braun are collaborating with Brewmaster Wolf Koehler to create the five-course event. Proceeds from each $40 ticket will go towards the Bridge House, which provides housing and substance abuse programs to the New Orleans community.
At the Aug. 14 Crescent City Farmer's Market, learn about the practical uses of bamboo from Mt. Hermon bamboo harvesters Joe and Jackie Dobie. The following Saturday, August 18, artist Mary Treadwill will be educating marketers about the New Orleans Recycle for the Arts program. The Tuesday market is at 200 Broadway St. and runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Saturday market is at 700 Magazine St. and runs from 8 a.m. to noon.
