Food as Relief
On Thursday, Oct. 11, by contributing at least 10 percent of the day's sales, area restaurants will participate in the international Windows of Hope Family Relief Fund to benefit families of victims of the World Trade Center attacks, who worked in the complex's food-service industry. The money will go toward emergency aid, as well as future scholarships and funds for the victims' families. At press time, participating local restaurants were Bayona, Brigtsen's, Commander's Palace, Dickie Brennan's Steakhouse, Palace Café, Restaurant August and Smith & Wollensky. As a thank-you to its customers, from Oct. 15-19 Charley G's (111 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie, 837-6408) will subtract 50 percent from the price of each entree during both lunch and dinner.
To clarify my Café Marigny (1913 Royal St., 945-4472) update of two weeks ago, the restaurant will remain open until its scheduled end-of-the-year move to the corner of Frenchmen and Royal streets. To top it off, I just learned that Steve Zucker, currently executive chef at Lafitte's Landing (404 Claiborne Ave., Donaldsonville, 225-473-1232), is coming on board this month as Café Marigny's executive chef. Replacing former Chef Scott Varadoe, Zucker will also oversee Café Marigny's new (after the move) wine list.
Another clarification: Contrary to recent media reports, Chef Dominique Macquet of Dominique's (Maison Dupuy Hotel, 1001 Toulouse St., 522-8800) says his restaurant did not close, nor cut hours of operation, following the Sept. 11 attacks. In fact, a new fall menu is in full swing, including many locally procured products like soft-shell crabs and white shrimp. Walter Bertot recently was named Dominique's general manager, as well as sommelier for a wine list he has helped compose for the past 18 months. Dominique's offers more than 60 half-bottles of wine, a unique policy that allows diners to order more than one bottle per dinner without (necessarily) leaving drunk or broke.
At this Saturday's Crescent City Farmer's Market, kick-off a month of Oktoberfest celebrations with a cooking demonstration and beer tasting courtesy of the Crescent City Brewhouse (527 Decatur St., 522-0571).
