Joining the Club
Chef Dennis Hutley's Kenner restaurant-in-a-cottage, Le Parvenu (509 Williams Blvd., Kenner, 471-0534), is one of 58 restaurants to receive the Distinguished Restaurant of North America (DiRoNa) Award for 2002/2003. DiRoNa is a non-profit organization founded in 1990 "to preserve and promote the ultimate in distinguished dining throughout Canada, Mexico and the United States." Once a prospective restaurant has been in operation under the same ownership for three years, DiRoNa sends undercover inspectors to conduct reviews of its food, wine, service, physical property and decor. Hutley's 6-year-old restaurant and, in his words, the "innovative American-Creole" food he serves there join the following other DiRoNa members located in the New Orleans area: Andrea's, Arnaud's, Bayona, Brigtsen's, Broussard's, Christian's, Commander's Palace, Emeril's, Galatoire's, Gerard's Downtown, La Provence, Lafitte's Landing, Louis XVI, Nola, Ruth's Chris' Steak House, Sazerac Bar & Grill, The Bistro at Maison de Ville and The Grill Room. Ella Brennan and the late Warren LeRuth and Ruth Fertel represent New Orleans in DiRoNa's Hall of Fame.

Market Watch
This Tuesday, April 30, at Crescent City Farmers Market, look for a cooking demonstration by Steve McHugh, executive sous-chef at Bacco (310 Chartres St., 522-2426). Mexican-American farmer and market vendor Diana Mendez will be rolling tamales during the Cinco de Mayo celebration on Saturday. Louisiana strawberries are luscious right now and going for about $12 per flat. Consider storing some away for smoothies next winter. The Tuesday market is at 200 Broadway St. and runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Saturday market is at 700 Magazine St. and runs from 8 a.m. to noon. Two springtime dates remain for the cooking demonstration classes offered by the Savvy Gourmet Cooking School in conjunction with the Jefferson Parish Parks Department.
