Kudos All Around
Chefs Dominique Macquet and Anne Kearney enjoyed some hard-earned attention in New York City earlier this month. Macquet was the guest chef at the James Beard Awards (a highly respected culinary awards event), and he focused on the flavors of his island homeland, Mauritius, during a wine dinner at Halcyon Restaurant in the Rhinga Royal Hotel. Kearney beat out four other nominees to win the honor of Best Chef of the Southeast at the awards ceremony.

Now Open
Bite Your Tongue (4113 Magazine St., 891-1653), a new catering and takeout place, recently opened along a blossoming stretch of Magazine Street. The unusually small, four-item takeout menu includes spinach and artichoke dip, creamy shrimp and mushroom pasta, seafood gumbo and a fruit pizza for dessert that's built upon a sugar cookie crust. The catering menu is, of course, more extensive.

Summer Break
From now until Labor Day, Vega Tapas Cafe (2051 Metairie Road, Metairie, 836-2007) will open for dinner only Monday through Saturday. Chef Allison Vega plans to spend the summer days with her children.

Beefing Up
Indigo (2285 Bayou Road, 947-0123) meanwhile has added to its hours, offering Sunday jazz brunches to the sounds of Tony Green & Gypsy Jazz. The spring months could be the best time to dine al fresco on the covered and air-conditioned patio.

Overtime
Brothers Kevin and Eric Cadow extended Cafe Indo's (216 N. Carrollton Ave., 488-0444) lunch hours recently, so that now you can get items like Vietnamese Summer Salad, mussels with French fries and pho (Vietnamese soup with chicken or beef) from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. The hybrid French-Asian restaurant also offers a prix fixe early bird menu Tuesday through Sunday between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.: three courses for $20.

Grapevine
Plan ahead for Martin Wine Cellar's (3827 Baronne St.; 714 Elmeer Ave.) eighth annual "Once Upon a Vine" food and wine tasting scheduled for Sunday, June 9. The $50 entry fee includes a $10 coupon good at either store. Tickets are limited. Call 899-7411 or 896-7300, or visit either store for details.

Experience of a Lifetime
In a ceremony that took place on Monday, May 6, in the courtyard at Commander's Palace, the Board of Directors of the New Orleans Wine and Food Experience (NOWFE) dedicated this year's Experience to Chef Jamie Shannon. Shannon cooked at Commander's Palace for 18 years and lost his life to cancer in November at the age of 40. -- Roahen
