11th Hour King Cakes
The following bakeries will be open for king cake sales on Mardi Gras Day (most shut down around midday, so call ahead for closing times): Angelo Gendusa Bakery (1801 N. Rampart St., 945-5817); Alois J. Binder (940 Frenchmen St., 947-1111); Chez Pierre Bakery (2211 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Kenner, 467-3176); and all La Madeleine French Bakery & Cafe locations. You may also call Steve Himelfarb, sometimes known as The Cake Man, who launched his own signature king cake with purple, green and gold icing this year. He sells it by the slice as well as the whole cake. Really Cooking
Remember the backwater babes in Cajun Country Cooking, one of the only cookbooks with content appropriate for both Playboy magazine and Barnes & Noble? Cookbook author, photographer and Louisiana babe herself, Dana Holyfield has self-published another recipe collection, New Orleans Mardi Gras Recipes, just in time for the city's bawdiest holiday. This one is rated G -- the raunchiest photo is of a woman displaying her makeshift, immaculate Mardi Gras latrine. All for festive, party-friendly dishes, the recipes range from Mardi Gras Punch to Crawfish Curry to Louisiana Dixie Beer Cake. Market Watch
The Crescent City Farmers Market will be closed on Tuesday, Mardi Gras Day, but musician Brady Roberts will perform this Thursday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. as part of the Music at the Market series. Chef Duke LoCicero of Cafe Giovanni (117 Decatur St., 529-2154) is the host of Saturday's 10 a.m. cooking demonstration. Also look for La Spiga's new bagels, both plain and sesame. The Tuesday market is at 200 Broadway St. and runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Thursday market is at 3700 Orleans Ave. and runs from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The Saturday market is at 700 Magazine St. and runs from 8 a.m. to noon.
