A New Start

Uglesich's may have closed forever. That's what Anthony and Gail say, but many believe that the Central City restaurant will someday return. In the meantime, Uglesich's long-time cook Zina Cooper has found a new home at Williams Restaurant (3100 Toledano St., 821-5023). With the arrival of Cooper, the 35-year-old restaurant replaced many old recipes with Cooper's versions, such as the barbecue shrimp, and added a whole list of new seafood items influenced by her 12 years as a cook at Uglesich's. The new dishes, all named after employees of the restaurant, include Roxy's Grilled Shrimp and Onions, David's Stuffed Oysters with Parmesan cheese and seasoned bread crumbs and Rose's Hot Shrimp with ginger, black bean paste and Chinese red pepper over pasta.

 

To the Nines

Barataria, that oyster-obsessed Lakeview restaurant, has been replaced by Nine Hundred Restaurant 'n' Bar (900 Harrison Ave., 488-1234). Randie Porobil, a longtime Lakeview resident who previously ran a cab company, has opened the neighborhood bistro with her husband, John Adams. They hired chef Louis Escorcia, who hails from San Francisco and most recently worked at The Living Room Steak and Lobster House (2800 Magazine St., 324-9550). The couple completely renovated the location, even installing a bar with a section set aside for non-smokers. Nine Hundred hopes to attract a neighborhood crowd to their contemporary bistro. The menu includes rotisserie chicken, pan-seared shrimp in a garlic saffron cream sauce and baked Spanish oysters topped with chorizo and seasoned with wild mushrooms.

 

Kiddie Cuisine

Little Jane or Johnny can get an early start on learning to cook at the Kid's Cooking Camp at Culinaria (1519 Carondelet St., 522-8789; www.culinariaart.com). During the five-day camp, kids between the ages of nine and 12 will cook and eat foods from Japan, Italy and Mexico. The week ends with a 'Kids Cocktail Party' on Friday. The morning camp will be held twice from July 11-15 and from July 25-29. The camp costs $359 per child; and reservations can be made by calling Caitlin Craig at 522-8789, ext. 111. For the more mature chefs, Culinaria continues its Rustic Tables series, which explores comfort food from around the world with a cooking demonstration followed by a four-course dinner. On Sunday, June 19, Culinaria will feature the cuisine of Tuscany. The following Sunday, June 26, 'A Taste of Mother Russia' will be the theme. Each dinner and cooking demonstration costs $60 and includes wine and cocktails.
