Loving the Cheese
Chef John Folse of Lafitte's Landing (404 Claiborne Ave., Donaldsonville, 225-473-1232; www.jfolse.com) and Kevin Vizard of Cafe Adelaide (300 Poydras St., 595-3305; www.cafeadelaide.com) team up for "Cheese Whiz: A Night for Cheese Lovers" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, at Cafe Adelaide. Folse, a celebrated chef and authority on Louisiana cuisine, will let Vizard handle the cooking that night. The Cafe Adelaide chef will create a five-course menu of small plates using cheeses from Folse's Bittersweet Dairy. Each course will be matched with a half glass of wine. Folse started making cheese four years ago and has already gained notice around the world. Saveur magazine named Bittersweet Dairy one of the top 10 dairies in America. The cheeses have received high honors at both the 2004 American Cheese Society competition in Wisconsin and the World Cheese Awards in London. Call 595-3305 for reservations. Antoine's Restaurant Cookbook is much like Antoine's (713 St. Louis St., 581-4422; www.antoines.com) itself — elegant and old fashioned. Roy F. Guste Jr. , the former proprietor of Antoine's, originally wrote and self-published the cookbook in 1979. Full of historical notes and lushly illustrated with watercolors of ingredients, the cookbook includes many favorite recipes from the venerable restaurant. For the first time in years, the cookbook is again available as a full-color, hardback edition. It can be purchased at Antoine's or through Mr. Guste's Web site (www.royguste.com). At noon Friday, Aug. 12, Mr. Guste will sign copies of his cookbook at Antoine's.
The Southern Comfort's Tales of the Cocktail mixes booze and books, with more than 30 authors of cocktail books paired with drinks at happy hour readings and "Spirited Dinners" at area restaurants. This week, catch a preview of the Tales of the Cocktail at a book signing from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, at Borders (3131 Veterans Memorial Blvd., 835-1363; www.bordersstores.com). Nine local participants in the Tales of the Cocktail, including Tim Breaux ( Absinthe: Sip of Seduction ), Kerri McCaffety ( Obituary Cocktail ) and Kenneth Holditch ( Galatoire's: Biography of a Bistro ), will sign their books and discuss drinking in New Orleans.
