Grand Dames Returning to Normal

Two of the French Quarter's old-line restaurants took a few more steps back toward normalcy. Brennan's (417 Royal St., 525-9711; now opens daily at 9 a.m. for its famously decadent breakfast service. The restaurant is also serving lunch and dinner daily, with lunch specials available from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekdays. Brennan's reopened in June serving meals five days a week after rebuilding its kitchen and other rooms in its historic Royal Street home. A few blocks away, Arnaud's Restaurant (813 Bienville St., 523-5433; ) has reopened its Jazz Bistro for musical meals. The space, located in the labyrinthine restaurant's Bourbon Street corner, features a traditional New Orleans jazz trio and the same menu available in the main dining room, including the three-course table d'hote menu. Arnaud's reopened last December and now serves dinner nightly and brunch on Sunday.

Lively Tasting Menu for the Dead

Taqueros Coyoacan (1432 St. Charles Ave., 525-9996), the Uptown, upscale Mexican restaurant, is serving a special menu on Thursday, Nov. 2, to celebrate the Day of the Dead, the Mexican holiday when dead relatives are said to pay friendly visits to their living relatives. Families traditionally welcome these visitors with altars of food, flowers and candles. At Taqueros Coyoacan, chef and Mexico City native Guillermo Peters is serving a six-course tasting menu starting with a mango pico de gallo, shredded chicken in chile chipotle, lentil stew, shrimp tamalito steamed in a banana leaf, rabbit stewed in mole, and pumpkin and rum ice cream. The cost is $45. Also, the restaurant has new lunch and dinner menus that resurrect some of the items that helped it build its reputation at its original Kenner location, including tacos, a grilled vegetable plate and pasta Azteca.

A Sharing Table

Table One Brasserie (2800 Magazine St., 872-9035) has begun its own charitable program called Dine Out for Charity and each month will select a local nonprofit to receive 20 percent of one day's proceeds at the restaurant. The first Dine Out For Charity day is Wednesday, Nov. 1, and the recipient is the New Orleans Police Department's Police and Justice Foundation ( A new charity recipient will be named each month as the program continues, and nominations can be submitted at the restaurant. Upcoming Dine Out For Charity days will benefit the New Orleans Fire Department on Nov. 29 and Children's Hospital on Dec. 20. Every customer who brings a wrapped children's gift to the Dec. 20 event will receive a free glass of wine. Table One opened several weeks after the hurricane. It serves lunch and dinner daily and brunch on Sunday.
