East Meets Frenchmen
Don't ask for sushi at the petite, stylishly designed new Japanese tavern in the Faurboug Marigny, Yuki Izakaya (525 Frenchmen St., phone n.a.); instead look for an assortment of small Japanese dishes called otsumami. Essentially Japanese bar snacks, offerings here like crab dumplings, peppery French fries with wasabi mayonnaise, beef and lemongrass "salsa" with shrimp chips, and steamed clams with sake butter are something quite apart from American bar-top classics like Buffalo wings and mozzarella sticks. The menu includes extensive descriptions and tasting notes of the sakes on hand, and Yuki also serves shochu, a clear, distilled Japanese liquor. The narrow restaurant space was previously the rear bar of Café Brasil. Yuki is open for dinner and late-night service Tuesday through Sunday and hosts DJs on Saturday nights after 10:30 p.m.

 

Candlelight Not Included
The classes, demonstrations and kitchen supplies at Savvy Gourmet (4519 Magazine St., 895-2665; www.savvygourmet.com) are all aimed at helping home cooks prepare better meals, but now the Uptown foodie mecca is also offering a shortcut to dinnertime salvation. This week, Savvy Gourmet plans to launch a new gourmet to go option with prepared meals ready to take home. Different meals are available each weekday, and some upcoming examples include the seafood stew cioppino, roasted chicken, short ribs, potato-crusted fish, and smothered chicken with corn macque choux. Soups and sides like Italian rice salad, grit cakes, and crawfish and tasso cheesecake are always available. Savvy also delivers these meals. See www.savvygourmet.com for a monthly menu.

 

King Cakes for Shrimpers
For the second year, Whole Foods Market (www.wholefoods.com) has pledged to donate $1 for every king cake sold at its stores in Louisiana, Texas, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina to the White Boot Brigade (www.whitebootbrigade.org), a nonprofit project from the organizers of the Crescent City Farmers Market that supports local shrimpers. The promotion lasts through Mardi Gras season, ending Feb. 5 this year. The White Boot Brigade was conceived in 2005 as a way to promote wild-caught Louisiana shrimp and the families who harvest them by making direct connections with restaurants and retailers around the country. Last year, the king cake promotion raised more than $15,000 for local shrimpers. The local Whole Foods locations are 5600 Magazine St., 899-9119, and 3420 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie, 888-8225.
