Sailing Into Town A Mid-City restaurant space near the intersection of Canal Street and Carrollton Avenue has housed three different diner-style operations in as many years, but the latest incarnation, under new ownership, is taking a different approach to the spot. Sailors' Seafood & Oyster Bar (133 N. Carrollton Ave., 483-3232) has the familiar array of fried seafood platters and po-boys, but the menu also offers some unique choices like a Greek salad with blackened calamari, an edamame soybean dip and an entrée-size phyllo-dough pie stuffed with baked crabmeat. On a recent visit, the raw oysters were perfectly shucked and exceptionally fat and flavorful. The kitchen also charbroils oysters and offers an interesting house specialty called "Sailors' Flaming Oysters." Served on the half shell, the oysters are cooked very lightly and topped with a mixture of chopped spinach, artichoke, bacon and Parmesan and then set ablaze before being brought to the table. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner daily.

Sweet Dreams Sucré (3025 Magazine St., 520-8311; www.shopsucre.com), the Uptown dessert boutique, marked its one-year anniversary recently with the announcement that it will open a new production facility intended to fuel national sales. Partners Joel Dondis and Tariq Hanna plan to open the new dessert kitchen at a Central City site on Euphrosine Street. The 6,000-square-foot space should be operating by August, taking over pastry, chocolate and gelato production now done at the Magazine Street shop. Dondis and Hanna plan to market their products to national food-service outlets such as hotel companies, and they aim to open new Sucré retail shops in the metro area and other cities.

Imperial Red Beans Opinions are often heated on the matter of pop stars and throwback crowd-pleasers chosen to headline the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival . But each year, the fest's Food Heritage Stage and Cajun Cabin demonstration area, both sponsored by Zatarain's , are sure bets to see local heritage in the spotlight. This Friday at 3:15 p.m., for example, the Cajun Cabin area will feature Antoinette K-Doe, the "Empress of the Universe" and widow of local R&B legend Ernie K-Doe, demonstrating the red beans and rice recipe that has sustained countless patrons at her bar the Mother-In-Law Lounge (1500 N. Claiborne Ave., 947-1078) and parties around town over the years.
