New on the Bayou Though it takes a bit of effort to find, Daniel's on the Bayou (3443 Esplanade Ave., 940-5939) serves mid-priced lunches and dinners that have drawn customers to the Esplanade at City Park (www.liveatesplanade.com), the enormous apartment building on Bayou St. John at Esplanade Avenue. Enter through the building's main lobby on Moss Street, or ring the buzzer on the unmarked side entrance on Esplanade Avenue, and you'll find this petite restaurant doing business from what looks like a corner apartment renovated as a dining room, kitchen and separate bar. The menu presents a mix of comfort food, like gumbo, roast beef and barbecue shrimp po-boys, and dishes like roasted lamb or pork and shrimp sautéed with tomatoes and garlic over fettuccini. Entrees are priced below $15, and many are below $10. Daniel's on the Bayou serves lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday, and accepts cash only. Cuban Revolution Two new purveyors of Cuban food have opened in Mid-City, including one with a location that will be familiar to local fans of Cuban sandwiches. Regala Store (4200 D'Hemecourt St., 485-6494) opened earlier this summer in the building that had long been home to the Cuban restaurant Garce's. While Garce's moved to Kenner for a spell, the same family owners are now back in Mid-City at Regala, which is a small grocery and take-out deli. Along with Cuban sandwiches and daily plate lunches, Regala serves the Uruguay sandwich, with steak on pressed bread, for which Garce's was known. Regala is open from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Also new in Mid-City is Mi Cuba (320 S. Broad St., 822-8099), a sit-down restaurant with a menu that includes Cuban sandwiches, sweet tamales, empanadas and traditional entrées like ropa vieja and balsero , a "raft" of fried plantains covered with shrimp. Mi Cuba serves lunch Tuesday through Sunday, and plans to add dinner hours soon. Burger Options Expanding Metairie burger emporium Phil's Grill (3020 Severn Ave., Metairie, 324-9080; www.phils-grill.com) has expanded to the Northshore, opening a second location in Mandeville (4700 Hwy. 22, 985-792-7380 ). Both locations feature a "build your own burger" menu with a variety of toppings, buns and meats, which now include bison and turducken options.
