Beer Stein

Dan Stein , proprietor of Stein's Market & Deli (2207 Magazine St., 527-0771; www.steinsdeli.net), is as passionate about good beer as he is about cured meats, cheese and bagels, and he has two special events coming up to share the love. Stein's Market has reserved the Uptowner (438 Henry Clay Ave.) for a 50-person beer dinner on Friday, which is co-hosted by the Jefferson-based distributor International Wine and Spirits. Chef and Uptowner owner Greg Sonnier will prepare a four-course dinner accompanied by specialty beers from Belgium and Oregon. The cost is $70 per person, and reservations must be made in advance through Stein's Market. Next week, on Tuesday, Sept. 9, Stein's Market and the Frenchmen Street bar d.b.a. (www.drinkgoodstuff.com) will host a six-course beer dinner at Marigny Brasserie (640 Frenchmen St., 945-4472; www.marignybrasserie.com), where chef Dan Esses will incorporate beer in the cooking of each dish. Courses will be paired with beers from Belgium, Canada, England and Germany. This dinner costs $75, and reservations should be made through Marigny Brasserie. Creole Italian Recipes and Memories Local chef and food entrepreneur Sal Impastato will hold a cooking demonstration at the Uptown location of Whole Foods Market (5600 Magazine St., 899-9119; www.wholefoods.com) on Saturday, Sept. 6. A native of Sicily, Impastato moved to New Orleans in the early 1960s and joined a long family tradition in Crescent City restaurants before beginning his own chapter. He started out at his family's Napoleon House (500 Chartres St., 524-9752; www.napoleonhouse.com) and later worked at other restaurants and bars in the French Quarter. In 1974, he opened Sal & Judy's (27491 Hwy. 190, Lacombe, 985-882-9443; www.salandjudys.com), from which he created a line of jarred sauces and dressings now sold widely in grocery stores. On Saturday, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., he'll prepare a number of pasta dishes and muffulettas at Whole Foods and give away free copies of his 23-page Sal & Judy's recipe booklet, while supplies last. A Second Savvy Savvy Gourmet (4519 Magazine St., 895-2665; www.savvygourmet.com), the Uptown culinary center for cooking classes, kitchen retail and meals to go, plans to open its first franchise location in upstate New York. Savvy Gourmet has a licensing agreement with a couple in Buffalo to open the store modeled on the original New Orleans location by the end of the year. — McNulty
