The Saint and the Sausage St. Andrew has a street named for him in the
Lower Garden District but otherwise has not been a big deal in New
Orleans. That may change after this Saturday's inaugural St.
Andrew's Day celebration at the Bywater wine shop Bacchanal
(600 Poland Ave., 948-9111) beginning at 4 p.m. Steven
Stryjewski, co-chef of Cochon, will cater the event, a gig
that includes making kielbasa for a sausage-eating contest at the
festival. The celebration also features vodka tastings, a bagpipe-led
parade, a scavenger hunt, tarot card readings and live music. The event
is produced by the same folks who orchestrate the annual New Orleans
version of the running of the bulls, where roller derby players stand
in for bulls. Details on both events are online at www.nolabulls.com.
Revving Up Reveillon Restaurant reveillon dinners, the modern spin
on a local Christmas tradition, are back this holiday season.
Originally, a reveillon was an extravagant meal served in a Creole New
Orleanian home after a long Christmas Eve mass. The tradition nearly
died out during the 20th century, but was revived, revamped and moved
to restaurants by French Quarter Festivals Inc., the nonprofit
that helps promote tourism in the Vieux Carre. This year, 36
fine-dining restaurants have signed up to offer prix fixe,
multi-course reveillon dinners. Some are remarkable bargains, with four
courses for $40, though prices vary. A list of restaurants and menus is
available at www.neworleansonline.com, under
the reveillon link.
Bidding on Lunch Galatoire's Restaurant (209 Bourbon St.,
525-2021; www.galatoires.com)
famously doesn't take reservations for its first-floor dining room,
which is precisely where many regulars are determined to be for the
celebratory Friday lunches before Christmas and Mardi Gras. Since 2006,
however, the restaurant has broken its no-reservations policy in order
to turn abnormally high demand for seats into a fundraising machine for
local nonprofits. The auction for this year's pre-Christmas Friday
lunch is Dec. 1, when the highest bidders will win reservations and
auction proceeds will benefit the Southern Food & Beverage
Museum and WRBH 88.3FM, Radio for the Blind. The
auction begins at 5:30 p.m. and pre-registration through the restaurant
is required. Galatoire's accepts reservations for its second-floor
dining room. — McNulty
