Fountain on the Square

Chef Scott Boswell's diner concept, Stanley (547 St. Ann St., 587-0093), is back after a long hiatus and a short move. The restaurant is now open in the lower Pontalba apartment building flanking Jackson Square, where a franchise of the Dallas-based chain La Madeleine was before Hurricane Katrina. Boswell is also chef/owner of Stella! (1032 Chartres St., 587-0091; www.restaurantstella.com), and he originally opened Stanley on Decatur Street in the weeks after the storm, but it later closed. Its return in the new spot means those who have missed or have never gotten to try Boswell's offbeat take on breakfast dishes and po-boys have another chance. The menu includes a Korean barbecue beef po-boy dressed with kimchee and an eggs Benedict po-boy, plus solid renditions of the Reuben sandwich, corned beef hash, a soft-shell crab po-boy and a dark-roux gumbo. The restaurant's look is vintage diner, complete with a soda-fountain counter and a selection of sundaes and milkshakes.

The Right Impression

A unique wine-and-food pairing will summon flavors of 19th-century New Orleans and the local legacy of French Impressionist Edgar Degas. Swirl Wines (3143 Ponce de Leon St., 304-0635; www.swirlinthecity.com) will provide tastings of six French wines paired with foods popular in the 1870s, plus an absinthe bar, all served at different locations throughout Degas House (2306 Esplanade Ave., 821-5009; www.degashouse.com), the historic home where Degas stayed with relatives and painted during the winter of 1872-1873. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Southern Food & Beverage Museum (www.southernfood.org). The party starts at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, and costs $45. Reservations are required and can be made through Swirl Wines.

Let Them Eat Rum Cakes

Local entrepreneurs Steve Veech and Sonny McCarthy didn't have to look far to find the main ingredients for the line of rum cakes they are selling throughout the area. The cakes are made with Louisiana pecans and sugar, and the rum comes from Celebration Distillation, the Gentilly-based producer of Old New Orleans Rum. Veech and McCarthy's business, Pirate's Alley Trading Co., pledges to donate a portion of sales to the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation, a nonprofit working to improve the lake's water quality.
