Springtime for Germany

Best known for its Oktoberfest, the Deutsches Haus (200 S. Galvez St., 522-8014; www.deutscheshaus.org) is opening a second festival this weekend, Maifest Volksfest, a spring celebration featuring traditional German food, beers, wines and live music. The party begins at 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Admission is $5 and free for kids 12 and under.



Baking Up Nostalgia

The latest outpost of the Tastee (901 Harrison Ave., 483-9080) bakery chain in Lakeview offers an unabashed homage to the flavors and memories of McKenzie's Pastry Shoppes, which once had a store at the same address. Tastee franchisee Jamie Santopadre opened the new bakery with a mix of Tastee-brand recipes and products based on original McKenzie's recipes, including buttermilk drops, brownies, jelly rolls and turtles. The McKenzie's chain shut down in 2001.
