As a companion to the nightly music concerts in the Superdome, the 2002 Essence Festival will hold its popular three-day series of seminars at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, from Thursday, July 4, through Saturday, July 6. Susan L. Taylor, editorial director of Essence magazine, will host the seminars that are aimed at empowerment and inspiration.
On Thursday, July 4, Essence presents its annual gospel celebration titled "Sisters of the Spirit," hosted by the Rev. Marcia Dyson. The seminar begins at 11 a.m. with "The Message: Sisters Speak the Word," with inspirational words from spiritual female speakers. Speakers include Minister Ava Muhammad, Southern Regional Minister of the Nation of Islam; and the Rev. Vashti Murphy McKenzie, who serves as bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Following the speakers will be a gospel music concert, "The Music: Songs of Inspiration." Michelle Williams of Destiny's Child will sing songs from her debut gospel album, Heart to Yours, and Shirley Murdock will perform songs from her gospel album Home.
On Friday, July 5, Andriette Earl-Bozeman hosts "Our Love, Our Stories, Our Voices." The day includes best-selling authors on an 11 a.m. panel titled "What Brothers Say When You're Not Around." Darryl Bozeman will serve as moderator; authors include Nick Chiles, who writes relationship books with his wife, Denene Millner; and Nathan McCall, best-selling author, reporter and journalism professor at Emory University. At noon, a discussion of sex and religion titled "Can You Love God & Sex" will feature both doctors and religious leaders. On stage at 1:30 p.m. will be "The Musical Ministry of Donnie McClurkin." Lastly, Bishop T.D. Jakes will give a keynote address at 2:30 p.m.
Talk show host Tavis Smiley hosts "Say It Loud: Our Message, Our Culture, Our Images" on Saturday, July 6. A two-hour seminar and workout session with fitness expert Donna Richardson titled "Losing Weight and Looking Great" begins at 8 a.m. The panel "Our Past, Our Present, Our Future" begins at 11 a.m. with Smiley, psychologist Dr. Na'im Akbar, and sociologist Dr. Joy DeGruy-Leary. At 1 p.m., poets Haki Madhubuti, Jessica Care Moore and Asha Bandele present "The Rhythm and The Muse: A Poetry Celebration." Faye Wattleton, national advocate on women's health issues, and the Rev. Al Sharpton present "Special Messages" at 1:30 p.m. Joan Morgan moderates "Say It Loud: Our Message, Our Culture, Our Images" at 2 p.m.; the panel includes poet Haki Madhubuti and mystery author Walter Mosley. The Rev. Michael Eric Dyson gives the keynote address at 3 p.m.
In addition to the seminars, the Convention Center will also be the site of The Essence Marketplace, featuring more than 80 arts and crafts vendors, Louisiana cuisine, authors and celebrities, and souvenirs. It will be open 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, July 4, through Saturday, July 6.
