Despite being out of print for six weeks and returning from Hurricane Katrina at half staff, Gambit Weekly
's body of work before the storm was good enough to earn 10 nominations recently in the Press Club of New Orleans awards competition. There were three multiple nominees: Katy Reckdahl in General News ("St. Joseph's Night Gone Blue"), Investigative ("The Woman Behind the Curtains") and Special Interest ("Long Road to Freedom"), Greg Peters (two out of the three nominations for Cartooning, "Blame Game" and "Year in Review") and David Lee Simmons in Feature ("Panic Attack") and Critical Review (Rize
review). The other nominees are Sara Roahen in Feature ("Devotions") and Allen Johnson Jr. ("The Hidden Wounds of War") and Olivia Jane Smith in Special Interest ("One-Act Wonders").
The other nominee in the Feature category, John Biguenet, was honored for his "Back to New Orleans" piece in Louisiana Cultural Vistas. Portions of this series that ran on The New York Times' Web site were also published in Gambit Weekly upon its return to publication. A complete list of the nominees can be viewed at www.pressclubneworleans.org.
Winners will be announced at the 48th annual awards ceremony on June 24 at the Astor Crowne Plaza Hotel.
Also, Simmons is leaving Gambit Weekly to become the A&E editor for Creative Loafing in Atlanta. We wish him well.
