Goin' to Jackson

Mental health institutions never looked so good. Jamie Wax returns to Le Chat Noir with his one-man show Goin' to Jackson, a dark comedy with music. Under the auspices of a misguided psychiatrist who desperately wants to improve the image of the state's mentally disabled, patients enter a pageant for the title of poster person and spokesmodel for the institution. Wax plays each of four contestants as well as other characters. "I have always been fascinated with people who were on the fringe of society, and I was interested in giving a voice to them," says Wax, who wrote the first version of the show in 1990. He has performed Goin' to Jackson across the country. Tickets $26 (includes $5 bar credit). — Allison Good
