Harlem

Tuesday, April 6, brought Harlem's sophomore album, Hippies (Matador), into the world. The Austin-via-Tucson trio celebrated as any rock band buoyed by equal amounts of buzz and booze would: by loitering at a video store. Reached via phone, bassist Jose Boyer elaborated. "[I Luv Video] gives out free beer on Tuesdays," Boyer said, lending new verisimilitude to Harlem's 2008 debut, Free Drugs. "You can probably find us here almost every week." Trading vocal, drum and guitar duties, dual frontmen Michael Coomer and Curtis O'Mara rampage through Hippies' relentless A-side, a veritable hit parade of bratty, anachronistic garage pop that recasts Nirvana's Bleach as a first-wave British Invader. The release efforts begin in earnest this week, with an in-store appearance at Austin's Waterloo Records and Tuesday's tour-launching gig at One Eyed Jacks. But on the album's birthday, the band was concerned with more immediate matters. "They're selling it for $20 across the street, which is a ton," said Boyer, who wondered if an I Luv Video merch table was a smarter strategy. "We have it all in the van. We should bust it out." Admission $9. — Noah Bonaparte Pais
