Sessions will take place at the Mackie Shilstone Center for Performance Enhancement and Lifestyles Management at Elmwood Fitness Center. Athletes will receive performance enhancement training and hear guest lecturers who will discuss such topics as proper nutrition, the psychological aspects of sports participation and injury prevention.
Hobley and Singleton are two of the most dedicated athletes I have worked with in my 25 years in the sports business. Not only were they superb performers, they are also excellent teachers, devoted to imparting their skills to young people.
Training young athletes to excel is "more than just a game" to Hobley, a graduate of Dillard University. "It's all about using sports three ways," he says. "One, understanding the importance of sound education. Two, developing the proper behavior to become an outstanding basketball player and citizen; and three, developing character both on the court and off it." He will teach fundamentals and basic skills involved in basketball as well as life skills.
Singleton, a Marrero native, was a wide receiver and punt/kickoff returner for three NFL teams between 1991 and 1997. He was drafted by the New York Giants; however, he spent most of his career with the 49ers, finishing up with the Baltimore Ravens and the Tennessee Titans. He will conduct the Speed, Strength and Agility Camp at the Elmwood Fitness Center in Harahan.
Singleton, like Hobley, is a very positive motivator. His motto is, "You can achieve whatever you want to achieve, whatever you set your mind to." He worked in our NFL Combine Preparation Program to assist Donte Stallworth to run one of the fastest 40-yard dash times in the past 10 years during his personal workout at the University of Tennessee. Stallworth was the New Orleans Saints' No. 1 draft choice.
These programs are open to boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 18. For information and registration, call 895-0698.
