In 1994, the first genetically modified food — a slow-ripening tomato — was placed in the U.S. market. Now, less than 20 years later, between 75 and 80 percent of pre-packaged food in the U.S. contains genetically modified organisms (GMOs), according to the Grocery Manufacturers Association.
