Hey Blake, what can you tell me about the Uptown School Association?

Hey Blake,

What can you tell me about the Uptown School Association? My wife went there as an elementary student and said the school closed after desegregation in the 1960s.

Bill Blain

Dear Bill,

The Uptown School Association was a private, nonsectarian school located at 3606 Magazine St. Opened in 1962, the school served children in first through eighth grades. There were 150 students at its peak enrollment, but by the time it closed Jan. 12, 1968, there were only 80 students and six teachers. Loss of state grant-in-aid funding was blamed for the closing.
