Hey Blake,
I live on Burdette and have been trying to figure out the namesake of my street. The best explanation I've found is that Burdette is a corruption of Bernadotte Street, which (Charles) Zimpel named after one of Napoleon Bonaparte's marshals. But I don't buy that because there's also a Bernadotte Street in New Orleans. What's the deal?
Andrew
Dear Andrew,
I'm afraid you'll have to accept the fact that the name of your street is a corruption of the name Bernadotte. Bernadotte Street was named in honor of Jean Baptiste Jules Bernadotte (1763-1844), one of Napoleon's field marshals. Bernadotte was elected crown prince of Sweden in 1810 and ruled that country as king under the name Charles XIV from 1818 to 1844.
