Honky, with Scott H. Biram

For years Austin, Texas, and New Orleans did their own little music thing, not really acknowledging each other because Austin was wrapped up in that cool rockabilly, honky-tonk, roots-rocking, South by Southwest vibe that nurtured an amazing alt-rock scene in the 1980s and '90s (moving from Stevie Ray Vaughan to the Butthole Surfers) and New Orleans was, well, New Orleans. We have to wonder what Hurricane Katrina will do that non-connection, what with all the New Orleanians who have moved, temporarily or not, to the hippest town in Texas. While it will be interesting to see what kind of impact New Orleans culture will have on the Austin scene, there's also an opportunity for New Orleanians to see what's been going on lately in Austin, one of the many reasons One Eyed Jacks booked the power trio Honky. Fueled by ex-Surfers bassist Jeff Pinkus -- who stopped Surfing after the major-label debut, Independent Worm Saloon, signaled a shift in to more mainstream electronic noodling -- Honky is nearing a decade of existence and hasn't shed its affinity for a sort of swampy grunge. The band's 2005 release, Balls Out Inn (Small Stone), features such audacious titles as "Love to Smoke Your Weed" and "Plugs, Mugs, Jugs" that almost suggests the campy metal of Supagroup with a twang. Fellow Austin rocker Scott H. Biram, whose furious live-show reputation precedes him, opens. Tickets $8.
