How can I protect myself against the flu?

While vaccination is the most effective way to prevent infection, there are a number of common-sense precautions you can practice to reduce the likelihood of catching or spreading the flu this season.

  • When you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth with a tissue and discard the tissue. If you do not have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow.

  • Wash your hands with soap and water often and especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are effective as well.

  • Avoid touching your hands to your eyes, nose and mouth.

  • When using exercise equipment at the gym, take advantage of sanitary sprays and disinfectants to clean your hands and wipe down equipment before and after use.

  • Try to avoid contact with sick people.

  • Stay away from public places if you are experiencing flu-like symptoms.

  • Do not travel if you are experiencing flu-like symptoms.
  • To schedule an appointment with a physician who can administer a flu shot or treat the flu, call HealthFinder at 504.456-5000 or visit ejgh.org.
