How old should I be for my first prostate exam?

In 2010, 217, 730 new cases of prostate cancer were diagnosed in the United States, and prostate cancer is now the second deadliest cancer for men over the age of 40. Early detection reduces the death rate for prostate cancer and offers multiple treatment options.

The American Urological Association Foundation recommends getting a baseline test for prostate specific antigens (PSA) along with a physical exam of the prostate known as a digital rectal exam (DRE) at age 40.

If you would like to schedule an appointment with an East Jefferson General Hospital urologist for a screening and physical exam, please contact HealthFinder at (504) 456-5000 or visit www.ejgh.org.
