Icons : Recent Sculpture by Martin Payton

Martin Payton's new sculpture series, Icons, explores notions of symbolic strength, spirit and lyricism culled from music and cultural history. The resulting works are not intended as portraits, but rather as evocations of ideas, defining qualities or characteristics born of the artist's 30 years of research and introspection. A New Orleans native and veteran steel sculptor, Payton is notably influenced by jazz history, a recurring theme in his work, which has been widely exhibited and was featured in a retrospective at the Amistad Research Center. He has received commissions throughout the country and his work is included in the permanent collections of institutions such as the New Orleans Museum of Art and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. He teaches art at Southern University in Baton Rouge. This is his fourth solo show at the Heriard-Cimino Gallery.-- D. Eric Bookhardt
