Il Trittico

At the end of his career, Giacomo Puccini (La Boheme, Madame Butterfly) started to write operas set in America. The New Orleans Opera relocates his trio of one act operas Il Trittico to New Orleans settings. Commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera in 1918, the three parts were originally intended as a single night's performance though the stories are unrelated. In Il Tabarro (The Cloak), a barge owner intercepts his wife on the riverfront when she arrives for a tryst with a dock worker. Suor Angelica (Sister Angelica) is an Ursuline nun who joined the convent as penance for having a son out of wedlock. She contemplates redemption upon hearing news that the boy has died. Gianni Schicchi (Johnny Schicchi) is the comic tale of a horde of greedy family members trying to rewrite the will of a wealthy relative. Frederick Burchinal (pictured) plays the barge owner and Gianni Schicchi. Jay Jackson also directs Brian Hymel, Mardi Byers, Cindy Sadler, Gwendolyn Jones and Angela Mannino. The performance is in Italian with English supertitles. Tickets $30-$120. " Will Coviello
