Japan Fest

The sun rises on a full day of Japanese cultural offerings at NOMA's Japan Fest. Originally created to call attention to the museum's expansive Asian holdings, the annual event has grown into a City Park celebration of Japanese culture. The festival showcases everything from the peaceful grace of Zen meditation to the elegance and formality of tea ceremonies to the rousing drumming of Houston's Kaminari Taiko troupe (pictured). Activities include Zazen lessons with the New Orleans Zen Temple, the Japan Club's formal Sado tea ceremony and martial arts showcases by the Aikido Club of New Orleans and New Orleans Kendo Club. Some activities take place inside NOMA. A Japanese market offering traditional foods and crafts will be set up in the adjoining Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden. Outdoor events are free. Indoor events are free to Louisiana citizens with ID. — Bryan Davis
