As the youngest of the formidable Marsalis jazz dynasty, drummer Jason has to live up to high expectations. Fortunately, he's equal to the task. Since debuting onstage with his father at the tender age of 7, Marsalis' projects have been consistently varied, fresh and backed up with skill. A co-founder of the Latin jazz ensemble Los Hombres Calientes, the NOCCA grad also has worked with the Brazilian dance project Casa Samba and Rick Trolsen's experimental fusion project Neslort. He chooses his friends wisely and widely — his longtime sideman, saxophonist John Ellis, made a huge splash last year with the latest album from his funky hybrid group Double Wide. Marsalis celebrates the release of the newest CD from his drums-and-vibes project, Music Update. Tickets $20. — Fensterstock
