Jello Biafra

Lately Jello Biafra has been sighted wearing a shirt that says, "If Evolution Is Outlawed, Only Outlaws Will Evolve." That goes a long way toward explaining the incisive phenomenon that is Jello. As a founding member of the Dead Kennedys, Biafra's manic stage shows and righteous, hard-hitting lyrics cut right through the bone of the Reagan/Bush I era of the 1980s. Since then, his political activism has been split between spoken-word performances and lectures and recordings with everyone from Mojo Nixon, D.O.A., Ministry's Al Jourgensen, and the Melvins. Biafra's writings predicted many things that have come to pass, from the rise of the religious right to the corporate domination of the media to many other catastrophes that we now take for granted. Many people rant, but Biafra can back it up with facts and humor and gonzo tactics. This performance and live interview will serve as a benefit for Tulane campus radio station WTUL during its 2006 Rock-On Survival Marathon. The station is currently broadcasting from the second floor of the Rue de la Course on Oak Street and Carrolton Avenue. We're hoping that Biafra will give his opinions of the recent events in New Orleans, developing further ideas he put forth on the recent Alternative Tentacles podcast. When asked about his interpretation of the president's State of the Union address, he said, "Today New Orleans: tomorrow the world. New Orleans is just the tip of the pimple for how we'll be treated by those who practice Bushism." -- David Kunian
