Jim Richard: Recent Paintings

Ah, the 1970s — the glory days of Nixon and Carter, Barry White and Ayatollah Khomeini, stagflation, leisure suits, Quaaludes, John Travolta, cheesy op and floral-patterned wallpaper and geometric chrome and plexi furnishings. It all got dumped in the '80s, but more recently came back to haunt us as young artists adopted the '70s with a vengeance. Longtime New Orleans artist Jim Richard knew a good thing when he saw it and has been painting the decade ever since, summing it up in new works like Modern Circles (pictured). In a statement fraught with rhetorical flourishes, the Arthur Roger Gallery says its 'exuberant, swirling disco mod interior with its mirrored surfaces and "conversation pit" of curved banquettes is redolent of the early 1970's. ... Richard's mordant wit imbues unpeopled period rooms with social ironies." — D. Eric Bookhardt
