John Ellis & Doublewide

8 p.m. & 10 p.m. Sat., Jan. 3

Snug Harbor, 626 Frenchmen St., 949-0696; www.snugjazz.com

New Orleans-to-Brooklyn transplant John Ellis had a fine 2008, and he's paying a visit to his old stomping grounds to start off 2009. The sax player's early-2008 debut release with Doublewide, Dance Like There's No Tomorrow, received critical raves across the board. The album is a genre-twisting hybrid of contemporary and traditional jazz, blues, gospel, street-parade rhythm and vintage R&B amalgamated into fervently danceable tracks that speak to the sounds of Ellis' childhood in the Deep South and years spent honing his style here in the Crescent City — playing with jazz luminaries like David Torkanowsky, Roland Guerin and Jason Marsalis, who is the regular drummer for Doublewide. The rest of the band includes the equally versatile and ferociously talented Matt Perrine on sousaphone and B3 organist Gary Versace. Tickets $25. — Fensterstock
