"I saved the original bar structure, including some of our harlequin paint pattern and the ironwork art," Scheuermann says. "Everything else is brand new."
That includes a full-size kitchen, new chairs and tables, a gas fireplace, a Smokeeter system, tableside flat-screen TVs, and six high-definition monitors strategically located throughout Wit's Inn for the big games.
Having been in the restaurant business for more than 35 years, Scheuermann is excited to offer a menu of gourmet pizzas, specialty salads, calzones and subs. Now that he's cooking up some great food, Scheuermann expects to have large, enthusiastic crowds during the upcoming football season. The tableside TVs allow fans to watch their favorite teams play, even when the larger screens are featuring a Saints game. Plus, Scheuermann also offers a variety of drink specials -- 24-ounce draft beers, $1 off specialty drinks and double bar-brand drinks -- for gridiron regulars. For draft beer drinkers, he has a system that ensures every brew is poured at 32 degrees.
Weekends are already hopping at the Wit's Inn, and Scheuermann thinks the crowds will only increase as more businesses reopen and the neighborhood repopulates.
"This is a fast-growing area," he says. "Even if a business doesn't return, another one will take its place."
Rest assured, Wit's Inn has already found its place. Pet Project Earthsavers (5501 Magazine St., 899-8555; www.secure.earthsaversonline.com) is holding a fundraising raffle to celebrate the reopening of its Uptown store after a fire closed it for four months and to raise money for the LA/SPCA's Hurricane Evacuation Program. Customers can buy raffle tickets between now and Labor Day for $5 each or three for $10 for chances to win gift baskets filled with products by Bumble & Bumble, Skinceuticals, Dansko, GoSmile, Jonathan, Phyto and others. A drawing for prizes will take place on Monday, Sept. 4.
