Latin Kings: A Street Gang Story
In 1996, Antonio Fernandez came to be the leader of the Latin Kings, New York's largest street gang of its time. As 'King Tone," Fernandez preached non-violence and promoted Latin pride in the Puerto Rican community. He claimed his purpose was to lead the gang in a positive direction. Many city officials, especially in law enforcement, did not buy these proclamations and sought to bring King Tone and his followers down for good. As producer, director and cameraman, Jon Alpert uses this documentary to explore King Tone's controversial motives and draw the viewers into the secret world of this inner-city gang as it struggles to survive political forces both within and outside the King society.
