Latino Health Outreach Project Benefit with the Shondes

In the face of minimal health care options for the uninsured, private initiatives like the Latino Health Outreach Project are doing the best they can to provide basic health services across the city. The Outreach Project focuses on bilingual care for immigrant workers with services that mix Western and nontraditional medicine. Support the good works and get your punk rock on with the Shondes, a Jewish feminist punk rock quartet with a violin. Their powerful vocals and dramatic activist lyrics have been compared to Patti Smith's music. The Brooklyn-based outfit draws its songwriting structures from those of classical compositions, combining chamber music with melodic rock for startlingly original results. The name is taken from the Yiddish word meaning "a disgrace" or "an outrage," which all good rock 'n' roll should be on some level. Sliding-scale donation suggested. -- Alison Fensterstock
