The LGBT Community Center of New Orleans is hosting Weight Loss Challenge 2010, which begins with a weigh-in at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 10, at the LGBT center (2114 Decatur St.; www.lgbtccno.com). Beginning Feb. 9 and the first Tuesday of every month, contestants will be weighed at the center at 7 p.m., followed by a panel discussion in which NO/AIDS Task Force nutritionist Ginger Bouvier, specialists and guest speakers will discuss heathy food choices, heart health, cooking demonstrations, wine pairing and more. The panel discussions are free and open to the public.
During the challenge, contestants will attend group exercise classes by professionals at local fitness clubs and outdoor locations in New Orleans. In addition, contestants will dine at a different local restaurant each month, where the chef has developed a healthy meal to teach them how to eat healthy foods without sacrificing taste. Featured recipes will be posted on the www.lgbtccno.org Web site after each dining event.
The contest ends with a closing weigh-in on June 26, followed by a banquet at Oceana Restaurant on July 9 during which winners will be announced. Prizes include a makeover from Studio E, a one-year membership and a day at Balance Spa in the Loews Hotel for the three people who lose the most weight. — Kandace Power Graves
