At 97, jazz trumpeter Lionel Ferbos is New Orleans' oldest working musician " definitely something to toot his horn about. The near centenarian, born in the Seventh Ward in 1911, has been playing New Orleans' dancehalls and nightclubs since his teens, before hot jazz needed the word 'traditional" as a modifier. In his time, Ferbos (pictured, right, with Lars Edegran) toured the South during the Depression on the Theatre Owners Booking Association vaudeville circuit and in WPA big bands. He also played on the soundtrack for Louis Malle's classic New Orleans film
Pretty Baby and has appeared on dozens of recordings, including an innovative collaboration with smoking young gun Troy Andrews on 2005's
Trombone Shorty Meets Lionel Ferbos. At this fete, Ferbos won't be resting on his laurels and blowing out candles, he'll be blowing up the bandstand as per usual, leading the Louisiana Shakers' set of classic down-home New Orleans jazz. Tickets $20.
