Lisa Marie Presley

Credit Lisa Marie Presley with teaching young female singers lesson No. 1 about being rocking: You can't do it without heavy black eye makeup. Since she revived the look for a new generation, Avril Lavigne, Ashlee Simpson and Kelly Clarkson have all tried it on to make themselves look edgier. Now What (Capitol), her new album, shares the tendency of her counterparts to make her songs sound potentially autobiographical, though Presley makes it work because she doesn't sound self-pitying. Instead of talking about being misunderstood and hounded by the press, she sings "High Enough" about getting loaded, and the title track about being lost and out of control. The whole project has a manufactured element to it -- song doctor du jour Linda Perry co-writes many of the songs -- and her voice is easily as processed as Britney's. In the end, though, there's something charming about Presley and Now What. Perhaps it's that -- despite the mascara -- the daughter of The King seems very clear-eyed about her place in the world. Tickets $23.50.
