Live Music Events (Jan. 6 - Jan. 12, 2014)

Barrence Whitfield and the Savages
Jan 10-11 |
Boston's Barrence Whitfield and the Savages unleashed a sweaty, scruffy R&B, rock and soul hybrid in the 1980s. The group reunited recently and issued Dig Thy Savage Soul on Bloodshot Records. The Gaunga Dyns and Lonely Knights open for the band at 10 p.m Friday at Siberia and Saturday at Freret Street Publiq House.

Suplecs with Lovey Dovies
Fri. Jan. 10 | Lovey Dovies went pretty on last year's self-released Shive; Suplecs stayed ugly on 2011's Mad Oak Redoux (Small Stone). Together, the two New Orleans bands remind us that the love sign and the sign of the horns are only one digit apart. Sideburner opens at 10 p.m. at One Eyed Jacks.

Brass Band Blowout
Sat. Jan. 11 | The annual fundraiser for the Dinerral Shavers Education Fund features Shamarr Allen, 5th Ward Weebie, Brass-A-Holics and Hot 8, Free Agents, Stooges, TBC, Pinettes, Baby Boyz and New Breed brass bands. At 10 p.m. at The Howlin' Wolf.

Karrin Allyson
Sat. Jan. 11 | Karrin Allyson has drawn four Grammy nominations for Best Jazz Vocal Album, most recently for 2011's 'Round Midnight. She makes a rare appearance in New Orleans at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Saturday at Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro.

Royal Bangs
Sun. Jan. 12 | Knoxville, Tenn., maximalists Royal Bangs hired Patrick Carney (Black Keys) to produce its fifth LP, Brass (Modern Art), and the result is both bigger and less busy than 2011's under-appreciated Flux Outside: vintage E.L.O. on a PBR budget. Bad Suns opens at 8 p.m. at Gasa Gasa.
