Louisiana State Museum Centennial

It's tempting to say, "Only in Louisiana," but that's technically wrong in this case: The Louisiana State Museum was born in St. Louis, Mo. The centennial of the Louisiana Purchase was the theme of the 1904 St. Louis world fair, then called the "Louisiana Purchase Exposition" (which also debuted cotton candy). Louisiana sent a host of displays and historical artifacts to be presented in a scaled-down replica of the Cabildo. After the fair, the exhibit came to New Orleans and eventually became the basis of the state museum, which wasn't officially created until 1906 and didn't move into the Cabildo and Presbytere in Jackson Square until 1911. But the centennial of the museum is being celebrated at the Cabildo complete with live music and historical cocktails. Some new museum acquisitions will be on display as well. The reception and music by Tim Laughlin's jazz trio and Hazel and the Delta Ramblers are free. Food and drinks are available with either a $25 ticket good for a sample at every booth or a $40 all-you-can-eat-and-drink pass. -- Will Coviello
