Luna Negra Dance Theater

Eduardo Vilaro should be a familiar face to many New Orleans dance fans. He's been coming to New Orleans to perform since appearing with New York's Ballet Hispanico in the early '90s. Now he's back with his own Chicago-based company, Luna Negra Dance Theater, to present a collaborative performance with his troupe, New Orleans artists and children and teens studying dance. The performance includes pieces from Luna Negra's repertoire, one of which incorporates New Orleans artist Maritza Mercado-Narcisse and a piece with 50 New Orleans teens and children who have spent the last two weeks studying movement and working with Vilaro to create a dance tribute to Jenny Thompson, a New Orleans educator and outreach co-ordinator who died of cancer. A native of Cuba, Vilaro founded Luna Negra to focus on contemporary movement and to illustrate differences in Latin cultures by adapting their traditional dances for the stage. In New Orleans, Vilaro has worked with Footbridge, a joint program between Friends of NORD and the New Orleans Ballet Association which offers four weeks of summer dance instruction to area kids. Tickets $15 general admission, $10 students/seniors. -- Will Coviello
