Madeleine Peyroux

Smoky-voiced chanteuse Madeleine Peyroux made jazz and pop fans do a double take with her 1996 debut album, Dreamland. Her torchy, Gauloises-and-whisky vocals seemed to come from an artist far older and more weathered than the then-22-year-old French-American singer. The Georgia-born Peyroux spent her teens and early twenties living in Paris, which may be where she got the chutzpah (and the soul) to take on ambitious covers like Edith Piaf's "La Vie En Rose" and tracks associated with other famous canaries like Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan. Her latest album, Half A Perfect World (2006), veers away from her previous focus on early and mid-century songs but is no less ambitious. The record is a collection of her takes on songs by visionary songsmiths like Tom Waits, Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen. Perhaps in order to assert her own belonging in that company of powerful originals, Peyroux also included four of her own original compositions on the album. Richard Julian opens. Tickets $26. -- Alison Fensterstock
