Making 10 Years — The Architecture and Product Designs of Ammar Eloueini

Think "digital" and computers and DVDs come to mind. Look closer and it soon becomes clear that digital technology may be changing the shape of the world around us. French-Lebanese New Orleans architect Ammar Eloueini takes digitalization further than most. His work at the CAC sometimes suggests crystal formations or mysterious biological phenomena. An early practitioner of applying computer animation programs to building design, his creations are often unusually fluid. Even his CoReFab #71 chair exists as an animation with near-infinite variations. To acquire the version that you want, you do a video capture that is then fed into a machine that reproduces it in polymer resin. Many of his commissions are for performance or retail spaces, for instance, the Paris showrooms of high tech Japanese fashion designer, Issey Miyake. A practicing architect with offices in Paris and New Orleans, Eloueini also teaches architecture at Tulane. -- D. Eric Bookhardt
