Method Man & Redman with Ghostface Killah

Smells Like Tang Spirit

Staten Island, a Shaolin outpost? Only an underground group as influential as the Wu-Tang Clan could have re-branded New York City's fifth borough as a breeding ground for crate-digging, kung fuing hip-hop warriors. And only one as popular as the nine-man clan could have been such blatant capitalists — consider Wu Wear the McDonald's to Rocawear's Burger King — without a shred of backlash from fans. The closest thing Wu had to a frontman, Method Man renounced the entry into fashion ("I never rocked that shit"), only to find himself and wisecracking partner Redman as deodorant pitchmen five years later. Much happened between 1997 and 2002, though, including the duo's tag-team debut (1999's Blackout!) and 2001 film How High, which recast Meth and Red as giggly blunt buddies — Cheech & Chong with two turntables and a microphone. Coming a decade after its progenitor, May's Blackout! 2 (Def Jam) sports the same laid-back mix of stoner humor, slayer beats and effortlessly clever rhymes. Ghostface Killah, Wu's top solo artist, and Duo Live are also on the bill. Tickets $33.50. — Noah Bonaparte Pais
