Last year, the inaugural New Orleans Oyster Festival supported an important local fishery endangered by the BP oil disaster. The festival returns this weekend, June 4-5, as the Louisiana oyster business is again in trouble, this time from the impact Mississippi River spillway openings are having on local estuaries (see "Scuttlebutt,"). The festival is held in the French Quarter next to Jax Brewery. The event features food booths from 20 restaurants, live music and contests for oyster eating, oyster shucking and the largest oyster.
