New Orleans Po-Boy Preservation Festival

Photo by Ian McNulty Organizers of the New Orleans Po-Boy Preservation Festival knew they were on to something big when more than 10,000 people turned out for the inaugural event last year. The heritage of po-boys tugs at the heartstrings, and the prospect of feasting on the city's favorites at a block party ranging along the historic Oak Street shopping corridor proved tempting indeed. Once again, the five-block-long party will feature local bands performing on two stages, arts and crafts booths, carnival-style games and 30 local po-boy purveyors. New this year are sample-size sandwiches, priced $2 to $3, to aid comparison of the many varieties around the festival. Expect everything from traditional roast beef to banh mi, the crunchy, spicy Vietnamese sandwich. Free admission. — Ian McNulty
