New Orleans’ Top 100+ Bars:
Courtyard Drinking

If you plan on being outdoors, you're going to want to cool off. Here are some bars that have you covered

Bacchanal
The courtyard behind this Bywater wine shop feels more like a backyard, with tiki torches, strings of holiday lights and tables of mismatched chairs lining a crowded path to the small stage. The shop offers an array of affordable fine wines, craft beers and cheeses. Order dishes like whole grilled fish off the Mediterranean-inspired menu offered at the kitchen window. Or take it all in perched on the balcony of the upstairs bar. 600 Poland Ave., (504) 948-9111; www.bachannalwine.com, @bacchanalwine

Bar Redux
This new Bywater restaurant and bar has a back courtyard (partially open-air, partially covered) in which to enjoy original cocktails such as the tropical Pussycat, a mix of Malibu rum, Midori and pineapple juice, garnished with a cucumber wheel, or the Kingston 12, a blend of Grand Marnier, rum, Gosling's ginger beer, chocolate bitters, Angostura bitters and lime. 800 Poland Ave., (504) 592-7083; www.barredux.tumblr.com, @BarRedux

Bayou Beer Garden
It's less a garden than an extensive covered deck with its own bar, but the outdoor area plays host to all sorts of gatherings, including game-watching parties. The bar hosts trivia and other theme nights and there's a list of more than 100 bottled beer choices and seven more on tap. Head to the kitchen window for a basket of gravy fries, thick-cut French fries smothered in roast beef debris. 326 N. Jeff Davis Pkwy, (504) 302-9357; www.bayoubeergarden.com

Bouligny Tavern
With wines by the glass and 60 bottles from which to choose, the tavern has an airy and sophisticated feel without being uncomfortably formal. There are couches arranged in an intimate setting, in addition to tables, and the outdoor patio has a similar feel. Small plates like bruschetta and sliced meats accompany wines and craft cocktails. 3641 Magazine St., (504) 891-1810; www.boulignytavern.com

Columns Hotel
The sprawling porch of the Columns Hotel, along with its adjoining side courtyard and Victorian lounge, is an ideal spot to relax while streetcars rumble down St. Charles Avenue. Beer, wine and classic cocktails can be paired with a full menu of bistro fare, and there's often light live music. 3811 St. Charles Ave., (504) 899-9308; www.thecolumns.com, @thecolumnshotel

Down the Hatch
This casual spot in the Lower Garden District has a little bit of everything — pub grub, crawfish boils in season, sports on TV, iced beer bucket or PBR specials and more. It's also got a rear courtyard with shaded table seating and an outdoor bar. 1921 Sophie Wright Place, (504) 522-0909; www.downthehatchnola.com

Pat O'Brien's
With two entrances and five different bars, this is the eye of the storm in the French Quarter. Pat O'Brien's has been dispensing its signature drink, the Hurricane, since 1933, and servers in green jackets stroll the slate-covered courtyard with trays of towering cocktails. Activity seems to radiate from the flaming fountain at its center, but the piano room is also a big draw. 718 St. Peter St., (504) 525-4823; www.patobriens.com, @PatObriensBar

Rusty Nail
Warehouse District condo dwellers can get a taste of Garden District lushness at the spacious patio here. With weekly open mic nights, live music and sports on TV, there are a lot of activities to choose. The courtyard is well-luminated with string lights and there are TVs outside as well. The beer selection includes more than 50 bottles and 16 brews on tap. Food trucks pay visits to the bar most nights. 1100 Constance St., (504) 525-5515; www.therustynail.biz, @rustynailnola
