Broussard's Empire Bar
New ownership has ushered in changes at the elegant Creole restaurant. Besides renovations, bartender Paul Gustings is showcasing a new approach at the Empire Bar and has revived drinks inspired by the British Empire; look for Navy-strength rum (gin, too), a potent and tea-touched English milk punch, and Batavia arrack (a smoky Javanese rum). 819 Conti St., (504) 581-3866; www.broussards.com/empire-bar, @NOLAbroussards

Cane & Table
Managing partner Nick Detrich's island-inspired bar offers a proto-tiki list drawing on centuries of Caribbean culture. Doris Metropolitan
An open kitchen and dry-aged beef on display add an approachable air to this chic steakhouse. Many drinks tweak the classics (a smoky Bee's Knees uses single-malt Scotch); more flashy molecularly manipulated offerings include ever-changing ice balls — in July, the Decadence ball drops, based on coconut rum, fruit juices, Pop Rocks and glitter. 620 Chartres St., (504) 267-3500; www.dorismetropolitan.com, @DorisMetNOLA

Fountain Lounge
The sparkling club has deco touches, in a nod to its 1930s origins, but it's decidedly modern in style. So, too, is the drinks list crafted by Matthew White and Hadi Ktiri. You'll find fruity smashes and ginger-fueled mules, and a retro cocktail that seems fresh again: a tiki-flavored rum, citrus and falernum swizzle. Fulton Alley
These luxe lanes combine highbrow bowling (leather sofas, gleaming floors, chandelier lighting) with quality cocktails — no surprise, given business partners' Neal Bodenheimer and Kirk Estopinal (both of Cure) hands in the menu. Happy hour is one of the city's best (a nearly all-day affair on Fridays) and a great chance to try well-made daiquiris and Pimm's Cups, as well as the Howitzer, a bourbon-peach sparkler revived from Cure's opening menu. 600 Fulton St., (504) 208-5569; www.fultonalley.com, @FultonAlley

Kingfish
This genteel tavern feels like it's been open for years, with an inviting entrance, warm decor and cocktail master Chris McMillian behind the stick. McMillian can recall the history of most any drink, as well as craft something special based on a customer's mood. Martine's Lounge
Pal's co-owner Suzanne Accorsi and partner David Porretto changed this former comedy club into a straight-up pub, with pool tables and free bar food. Meauxbar
Well-made classic cocktails support chef Kristen Essig's French plates at this just-reopened bistro. Popular sips include pastis (an anise liqueur), vermouth and the bubbly Genepy 75, based on the herbal liqueur — all light, refreshing, and meant to go with dinner. MoPho
Chef Michael Gulotta's Mid-City restaurant serves flavorful, shareable plates and Asian-inspired cocktails, mixed with house-made ingredients (tamarind-honey syrup, pickled citrus, dragonfruit-infused tequila). Tableau
The latest in Dickie Brennan's string of restaurants has a theatrical bent, given its shared space (including an airy courtyard) with Le Petit Theatre du Vieux Carre. Three Muses
New bar manager Kimberly Patton-Bragg has rebooted the drinks list at this restaurant and music joint, where diners nosh on chef Dan Esses' global small plates during live jazz sets. Treo
Artsy Treo is different than Pauline and Stephen Patterson's other pub, Finn McCool's. The sleek bar and homegrown restaurant (helmed by chef James Cullen, who offers Louisiana tapas) has an art gallery upstairs.
